Back to Hogwarts Week: Umbridge vs. Voldemort

We all know the villain of Harry Potter is the great He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. He’s pure evil and has killed many in his quest to purify the Wizarding race and to gain immortality. But even though all that, all his attempts on Harry, the deaths, the snaky ugliness, there is one in the Wizarding world who I hate more. Her name is Dolores Umbridge.

There is no one in literature that I hate more, and when I mean hate I mean I can hardly read the book when she’s on the page. I think many people feel this way as well. What makes this small, pink woman more hated than Voldemort? Here are some of my theories.

                1) She works for the Ministry of Magic
As a part of the Ministry you would think that she would be one of the good guys, one who would be against Death Eaters but in the 7th book she appears to be in league with them. Umbridge persecuted wizards and witches who weren’t born of a magical family, who weren’t pure bloods.

                2) She believes she’s doing Good
Adding all the rules to Hogwarts, kicking out the teachers and Dumbledore, attempting to use the Cruciatus curse on students, she does all this and more with the belief that it is the right thing to do and that is scary. Voldemort knows what he’s doing, creating chaos but Dolores has deluded herself. She hates everyone except the Slytherine and under the guise of “keeping the peace” she turns the school into a sort of prison.

                3) She makes Kittens and Pink Evil
Seriously, kittens and pink aren’t creepy until she’s around them. Maybe this isn’t a good reason but it makes her look even more sinister then the Dark Lord all in black.

Umbridge                                                            Voldemort
Pink                                                                       Black
Kittens                                                                  Snake
Hates Harry                                                          Hates Harry
Pure Evil                                                              Hitler Wannabe

He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named may be all big and bad-a$$ but I think this small, toad-lady in pink could give him a run for his money if she ever felt so inclined.

  1. I think that Voldemort was more a kind of absolute evil that we can understand but not really relate to. Umbridge was the kind of evil we all have experienced in our lives. Someone in a position of power who thinks she's all-good when in reality she's vile. She reminds us of that one terrible teacher, or truly horrid boss or whatever. Basically she's the one that brings out the worst in all of us! Man I wish she'd REALLY gotten hers in the series. I would have liked to read that!
